Columbia, SC- South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison issued the following statement regarding the 50th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid.
“Fifty years ago today, Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law to help our most vulnerable citizens gain access to healthcare. At the time seniors over 65 were routinely denied insurance due to their age and too many Americans living in poverty lacked healthcare coverage.
“For the past fifty years, Democrats have sought to preserve and protect these programs- a life preserver for so many. Medicare and Medicaid are a promise to our nation that access to healthcare is a right for everyone. Sadly, under a Republican Congress in Washington and a Republican controlled government here in South Carolina we’ve seen countless attacks on these invaluable programs and an attempt to revoke the rights Medicare and Medicaid protect.
“This anniversary serves as a call to action for Governor Haley and the Republican legislature to pass Medicaid Expansion for the 236,000 South Carolinians who lack healthcare coverage so we can continue to uphold our end of the fifty year old promise to provide healthcare to all Americans.”
