By the very slimmest of margins, Joe Cunningham has taken the seat once occupied by the Appalachian Wanderer, Mark Sanford.
So, what does that mean?
We are curious yellow. Will he become the Joe Manchin of South Carolina, all curvy and slick, ever the politician that must weave his way like a water moccasin between the district’s lunatic right, and the liberals dying to be, for once, a part of the political equation? How do you navigate these low-country waters?
You abandon Nancy Pelosi for one. There are others that will rear their ugly heads, but all in due time.
For now, you shun your party and try to become a Democratic Independent.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina’s newest congressional Democrat is standing by his pledge not to support Nancy Pelosi for speaker of the House. Congressman-elect Joe Cunningham’s campaign confirms to The Associated Press that he is “a man of his word and will keep the promise he made to voters and will not vote for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker under any circumstance,” Cunningham spokesman Tyler Jones told The Associated Press. Cunningham’s stance is in addition to public vows by at least eight sitting House Democrats and two new representatives who told Politico they will vote against Pelosi on the floor.
