New SC Democrat won’t back Pelosi ‘under any circumstance’

By the very slimmest of margins, Joe Cunningham has taken the seat once occupied by the Appalachian Wanderer, Mark Sanford.
So, what does that mean?
We are curious yellow. Will he become the Joe Manchin of South Carolina, all curvy and slick, ever the politician that must weave his way like a water moccasin between the district’s lunatic right, and the liberals dying to be, for once, a part of the political equation? How do you navigate these low-country waters?
You abandon Nancy Pelosi for one. There are others that will rear their ugly heads, but all in due time.
For now, you shun your party and try to become a Democratic Independent.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina’s newest congressional Democrat is standing by his pledge not to support Nancy Pelosi for speaker of the House. Congressman-elect Joe Cunningham’s campaign confirms to The Associated Press that he is “a man of his word and will keep the promise he made to voters and will not vote for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker under any circumstance,” Cunningham spokesman Tyler Jones told The Associated Press. Cunningham’s stance is in addition to public vows by at least eight sitting House Democrats and two new representatives who told Politico they will vote against Pelosi on the floor.

From Charleston to Pittsburgh, an Arc of Premeditated American Tragedy

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.” – Abraham Lincoln

In these times, America has no city of brotherly love. But that is not unusual. We have been haters since the formation of this Republic. We don’t like strangers and we don’t like newcomers. Some of that is human nature, but we take it to extremes when we hate with such animus that guns are drawn.

The better angels of our nature are under assault by angels that Abraham Lincoln did not mention.

This from Jelani Cobb in The New Yorker

The architects of these atrocities were both white men whose fury was amplified in the echo chamber of the Internet. They conceived of their actions as a form of self-defense.

Dad of Missing Woman Kidnapped by Lover’s ‘Evil Queen’ Wife Is ‘Not Giving Up’ Search to Find Her

It is hard to believe that crimes like this can occur in South Carolina. We are raised to believe they occur in places far away. Cases like this shock us back into reality.
The sad thing is that Heather is one of many, less publicized cases that occur far too often in our state.

What Is Lindsey Doing?

We are confused. Lindsey Graham is all over the chart. Sometimes he acts rational; sometimes we are convinced he is not taking his meds. We are beginning to get the feeling a little bit of Donald Trump has rubbed off on him. He seems to crave attention all the time.
What’s up with that?

This ‘Radical Left’ that is his latest fascination does not even seem to exist. Certainly not in South Carolina, unless you can be called a radical for peacefully assembling.

We thought that was patriotism?

The false promise and limitations of pre-tax health accounts | TheHill

Welcome to voodoo healthcare, the creative accounting which seeks to allay your fears while hiding from you the unpleasant truth; the affordable care act might be the best choice for protecting you and your family.

But no one wants to hear that.

They want to tell you about health savings accounts and catastrophic health care. They sound a lot better than Democratic socialist medicine.

They are not.

Too many loopholes and cheap plans that offer nothing but promises. Not enough money deducted from your paycheck to cover one real catastrophe.

The politicians are saying they will fight for pre-existing conditions even as they fight in the courts to dismantle them.

Your healthcare is under attack by people who would rather have a generous tax cut, because they believe tax cuts are economic salvation. As the debt climbs higher and higher, they need to find a way to pay for the tax cuts that were supposed to pay for themselves.

They are not. We are drowning in debt, and one way to stem that is to repeal the ACA. Your best bet for real health insurance.

From The Hill

The new pre-tax rule is part of a package of regulations prompted by last year’s executive order promoting health-care choice and competition.

When the Bubble Bursts, We’re So Screwed – Reason.com

Matt Welch argues in this article that the debt bomb is going to hurt this country bigly, but while entitlements are made out to be the major cause, there is scant mention of the defense bomb, which grows every year. The DOD is a money pit that cannot reconcile what they receive. When is someone going to balance the DOD?

From Reason

All we have to show for 9 years of economic expansion is record amounts of debt, and all long-term fiscal problems ignored.
